What is orthodontics?

The Spanish Society of Orthodontics (SEDO) defines Orthodontics as “a specialty of Dentistry that studies, prevents and corrects the different alterations of development, the shapes of the dental arches and the position of the jaws in order to restore the morphological balance and function of the mouth and face, also improving facial aesthetics”. The increase in the demand for aesthetic treatments in recent years, leads in many cases to overlook the fact that in order to “move the teeth” it is necessary to have knowledge of biological and functional principles, within a health framework .

Orthodontics is not just about aligning and/or moving teeth, and in many cases certain individual factors of each patient must be taken into account, such as age, general health status as well as dental and periodontal health; the type of growth,… and many other factors of great importance before assessing the simple “alignment” of the teeth, which in the wrong hands can lead to complications.

That is why it is important that you know the clinicians who are going to carry out your treatment, and make sure that they are sufficiently trained and qualified to practice this complex but wonderful profession. The goal of this website is none other than to try to explain the main questions that patients usually have regarding orthodontic treatments: care to take into account, hygiene methods, advantages and disadvantages of the different types of treatments, etc. .

So do not hesitate to ask me about any topic related to orthodontics or about which you would like more information. I hope it helps you!
