Eating with braces

Foods and snacks to avoid during your orthodontic treatment

One of the most frequent questions asked by our patients is:

Is there anything I should not eat with braces?

Luckily for our food-loving patients who are itching to start their orthodontic treatment, there are very few food you shouldn’t eat when you’re wearing braces!

For orthodontic treatment to work correctly, it is important that our brackets do not come off, and that is why we must avoid food with a harder consistency that require more intense chewing forces and that will cause our brackets to fall off very easily. ; which would lead to the orthodontic treatment being longer in time.

Food to avoid

  • Candies, sweets and chewing gum.
  • Hard bread or biscuits.
  • Large chunks of very stringy meat: It doesn’t mean you can’t eat meat, but try to cut it into smaller chunks.
  • Bone-in chicken thighs, corn cob pineapples and bone-in olives.
  • Uncrushed dry fruits
  • Carbonated drinks.
  • Biting ice cubes.

Small pieces of food is always a winner!

The rest of the food that we have not named such as fruits, vegetables, fish, meat, chicken, pasta… as well as some of those mentioned above, you can eat with braces without any problem as long as you cut them into small pieces.

I hope that these tips help you enjoy food without compromising your orthodontic treatment!
