Brushing your teeth with braces

To keep your teeth healthy, brushing your teeth is essential, and if you wear braces it is even more important, so when brushing your teeth you should know how to do it correctly. (video at the bottom of the page).

Brushing your teeth in 3 easy steps!

1.     interproximal cleaning:

The first thing is to clean the areas between your teeth. For this we must use dental floss. If the gaps between the teeth are large, we can use interproximal brushes. In this first step it is important not to be aggressive not to damage the gums. Orthodontic archwires make it difficult to clean this area and it takes a little while at first, but practice makes perfection! A good alternative to using dental floss is the dental irrigator, with which you can clean this area quicker and effectively.

2.     Toothbrushing:

Whether you use a manual or electric toothbrush, you should brush your teeth “above” and “below” the braces. To do this, place the brush at a 45º angle and make small circular movements on each of the teeth (video at the bottom of the page).

3.     Mouthwashing:

Once toothbrushing is finished, you must spit out the toothpaste as many times as needed, but you should not rinse out with water. If you prefer to rinse with water, it would be a good idea to use a fluoride mouthwash after brushing to protect your enamel against cavities.
